updates and hang ups: project drag
#21
Its not about being the fastest for me. Its about doing something different from everyone else. Even if all I can get out of it is 12s I'll be happy becuase it will be faster than most peoples 80s model Toy. I'm not real worried about the cost either since I'm not in any hurry to finish it and I've wanted to do this for a couple of years now. I know most people like it more raised and I understand that. I just hope people will appreciate it for the amount of work I've done to get this far.
With the drag times I consistently ran a 21.3~~ in 2WD. Out of five runs my biggest difference was .03. My R/Ts were all around .35~. Yeah I know, I'm slow lol. I'm a little pissed at the moment after the Email I got today. My local 1/4 mile is now closing down to 1/8 because the pro drags keep losing traction after the sticky stuff ends at the 1/8 mark
real gay. Now its going to be harder for testing in the long run.

Have you tried to lighten the truck? These things are HEAVY! If you got the time, try removing the front diff, driveshaft and cv joints, see if it helps your time. The added weight might not be worth the traction.
Also, do you have the stock open rear diff?

Jay is on to a good point, relocate the battery to the bed, remove all the front drivetrain, get some drag radials, locker and gears, and build your suspension to hold traction. I used to spin all 4 tires on my awd turbo cars thru 2nd gear. Even though you have 4wd doesnt guarantee automatic traction, you just dont have the power yet to break the tires loose. Even though this is something different, there is still a huge parasitic loss thru the drivetrain.

Yep still have the stock rear diff. I do need to drop some weight and reduce drag but if I took all the front drive train off it would defeat the purpose of my build. I should go buy a 2WD and raise my 4x4 back up if I go that way. I'm looking into buying a new Tacoma so I won't be using my 87 as a daily driver. After I get into something new I'll start taking comfort parts off like the A/C.

If you're going to build this strictly for 4wd drag, I have some suggestions to give you from the work I did on my integra, mostly along the lines of weight reduction.
Replace the big battery with one of those tiny tractor batteries, it'll have enough juice to start the engine a few times and the alternator will charge it up pretty quickly.
Fiberglass fenders and hood will drop a hundred pounds probably. Take off the tailgate, those things are REALLY heavy.
Tear out the dash, seats, carpet, headliner, door panels, just about everything in the cab. Mount your cluster (or just a tach since that's all you REALLY need) somewhere ontop of the steering wheel mount bracket and find a sturdy bucket seat. You MIGHT be able to drop another hundred pounds there too, I dunno how elaborate the interiors are on those trucks.
Junk the A/C, P/S, Cruise (if you have it). Drop the gas tank for a small 5 gallon fuel cell.

There's a lot you can do to drop weight, it just depends how far you really want to go and how spartan you want the car. My integra still has a full interior, but I don't have A/C, P/S, or Cruise anymore. Since I can't drive it on the street legally I'm going to be stripping it down to just about nothing soon. I'd say do it incrementally. Start with the A/C, then the P/S, passenger seats. See how far you are willing to go after each visit to the track.

Ok so there is a small change in plans. The new project drag-remix:

It has a long way to go but I think this will turn out better in the end. Its already missing enough parts I wouldn't want to drive it around daily and the truck is great condition so I don't want to tear it up like that.

good call. I've torn into a couple perfectly good daily drivers to modify them and make them more powerful. In the end its a very fun car to drive at the track, but you end up avoiding driving it on the street because it's uncomfortable, noisy, and you worry about parking it anywhere for too long.
Best of luck, half your weight reduction is done already. haha

I have thought about doing exactly what you are doing a few times.
I'll also echo the supra motor. As much as I love my turbo 22re if I was going for power I would go for the supra option for sure.
Keep us updated!

Since its EFI it will be easier for me if I decide to Supra swap it. I found a few wiring diagrams thanks to some links posted here. Thats what I needed help with most lol.
