i have a 1989 toyota 4x4. when i turn to the left or right at its maxed radius, there is like a grind or loud noise in the suspension. not sure what causes it. my 1987 pickup did that and my toyota t100 did it. can anyone help me?

 

Lift the front of the truck and turn the tires all the way to one side and turn the tire by hand and see if you can replicate it. Also is it coming from the front or back or the truck?

 

It's the steering stops. They are little plastic caps over bolts on the lower part of the steering knuckle. They slide on little pads on the lower control arm. When the plastic caps wear through the metal bolt rubs on the lower control arm at full lock and makes the horrible grinding noise. You can smear some grease on the bolts to cure the problem temporarily. I bought these and have never looked back.

Previous poster is correct, it's the steering stops. The bad news is it sounds awful. The good news is it doesn't hurt a thing except your ears. Grease will only last a month or so. Either get the covers suggested in the previous post, or learn to live with it as I have. Makes people notice your rig!:-)
