Ok the 22ret sucks on low end. What cam could I go with to help bring that up, with out sacrificing too much of the top end? I know the dealio with air intake and exhaust but i was curious to this particular modification?

a higher grind cam would be nice.
5 speed ?
smaller tires (higher tire pressure)
remove all dead weight (spare tire, mud flaps, fuzzy dice, tail gate)
tune up, or dyno
smaller turbo, for less lag.
nitrous

 

Not to sound like an ass, but you have been told before:

COMPRESSION RATIO

the 7.5:1 compression is the problem. Anything else will just be a bandaid on the problem.

 

I agree with TC. A cam will not buy you mutch with no other changes. Short of a rebuild the only thing worth spending money on unless you are going to go with everything (turbo, stand alone, injectors, etc) is, as you mentioned, exhaust. Going to a 3" from the turbo back will help the turbo spool quicker.

Save the cash and rebuild the motor to ~8:1. The stock compression is a joke, especially at altitude.

Or work on Gearing.. Regearing the diffs is always an easy way to get more into the power band.. Or You could always drop the auto for a 5 speed. That'd spice it up.

Stick it out. With some modifications the 22ret can be an awesome motor, just take your time and do it right. Good luck!

 

I have a trubo 22re with 9.5 to one and I have no problems down low but am limited to top end power. I only run 7 psi max and prolly wont exceed it. I do have sds to make sure I can run 7 psi maybe 10 safely. I would rather have the low to mid power anyway.

 

Harry Wagner brought me his 22RTE truck down from Nevada for tuning. To date, I've never actually driven a "factory" turbo truck.
He's running a small t3/t4, 3" exhaust, and a turbonetics manifold.
I'm impressed with it, even with the t3/t4 - I expected more lag.

I don't notice much off idle difference between it and my 4runner, which is 8.5:1. Harry's truck is huge - running 37s (I think) - and all the other crawler hardware.

I'd suggest that you try a different turbo before you tear that whole thing down and spend the $500 in pistons that are going to be required to significantly raise the compression.

For an off-idle turbo, use a .42/.48 Garrett T3. You can even get an adapter that will work with the stock 22RTE manifold. I ran this turbo for a little while and it simply boosted instantly. I had it coupled to a 2.5" exhaust system and a moderately restrictive manifold at the time. I think this will really pick up your low end.

 

Cool, just curious. I want to eventually work on my turbo and injectors. But i thought i might get away with a smaller project first
