Hello everyone, I?m researching this Tundra V8 swap and I know there is a lot of knowledge here. So I?m looking for this info?
What parts will I need?
I have the manual 3vze, do I need a tranny?
What needs to be done to the computer system?
Is there any way to eliminate the computer system from the new engine?
Also if anybody out there has done this before I would love to talk to you and see some pics.

Yes you will need a new transmission, the 3.slo one will NOT hold up to all of that v8 power.

Since these engines are so new, there is no way you are going to eliminate the computer system, or get it to run right if you tried.

I would suggest searching high and low at tow yards, salvage yards and everywhere you can think of for a totaled tundra pickup and just buy the whole truck, its cheaper than buying the parts.
Doing this you will have every singe part you need including wiring looms and computers. it is best to keep the origional computer with the origional engine.

you may also need a few mods to get it to fit right under the hood.

do a search. an engine swap is an engine swap.....what i'm saying is, you will need all new engine mounts, the engine AND the ECU out of the donor vehicle. being a newer engine i'm sure that there is no kit for it, and most of the work will have to be custom fabbed. it's gunna be a huge job. do A LOT of research.

 

I had heard this swap wasn't feasible because of some sensors or something that the engine needed to run that you couldn't (not easily of course) put in the older truck to satisfy the computer.

I do know the lexus 4.0 gets done pretty regularly though and is really close in horsepower numbers.

What about a V6 out of a newer 4-runner or Taco? Way eaiser?

If you do this, don't bother trying to fake out sensors. The ECU will be expecting to get an Ok to allow the engine to start from the body control module. You don't have a BCU or CAN buss like the newer OBDII vehicles. The easiest way to get around this is to by a programmable ECU and attend the training course which will enable you to sniff a working Tundra CAN bus and spit out the correct CAN messages when the ECU pings for them.

We had to do a lot of this on an Equinox into which we installed a Fiat diesel where the Fiat ECU had to communicate with the stock Chevy stuff. This was a diesel electric hybrid conversion.
