To trust the nerf bars, or not?
Hey guys,
In my tire rotating expedition, I was messing around in the garage, and decided to lift my truck by the nerf bar. Well, i started to, but noticed a change in clearance between the bar and the pinch weld. Pics:
Before Lifting:
As i start lifting (just raising the suspension:
does this happen to all nerf bars? or are these just sub-standard?
I'm not really trusting them, because I have seen the quality of work that the previous owners did (crappy radio splice, cut into the wheelwell for speakers, destroyed my door for a 6x9 speaker, bracket lift, newspaper under bondo). What do you guys think, are they safe to lift by?

Absolutely not.
Those are not meant for lifting or holding the truck no matter who installed them.
They are steps, they are NOT rock sliders.
If you lift by that, you are asking to get crushed by your truck when they fail.

why are you NOT using the frame to lift the truck by.
btw, those bars are only as strong as the nuts/bolts holding them.
the frame/sub frame/axles etc. should always be the spot for any jack.
not saying it wouldnt work (it obviously did) but its like lifting your truck by the doors or tie rod. not good.

where do i lift from the frame with a high-lift? All i've found is the bar behind the front bumper/valance, and the rear bumper maybe?
I'm saying if all i had was a hi-lift jack. I do have a floor jack and lift by the rear axle when i'm in the garage.

i use mine as sliders and to lift my truck... but i have plated the ends renforceded them and welded them to my frame, all for alot less than sliders since they came on my truck and i broke the mounting bracket first time in the rocks

please get a floor jack. 100bucks at sears.
and jack stands for climbing under the truck.15bucks anywhere (or a log-free)
safety is mostly a choice.
you posted b/c your thinking and if you plan on doing any work on your truck, a good floor jack will pay for itself.

You can't lift from the frame with a standard hilift. They make some attachments that can do it, but by the time you buy those, you may as well get a set of TrailGear sliders and have some body protection!
A big reason why most of us have aftermarket bumpers is to have hilift points...

Speaking of high lift points has anyone lifted the front of their truck with the high lift under a cow pusher in the front???
I instaled mine few weeks ago and have been thinking of trying. welded brackets on the bottom bolted up with half inch bolts and bolted to the stock bumper for stability. im thinking that it will crush the bumber like a tin can personaly. I still kinda wanna try it thought.
