truck won't start

I just bought a 89 4x4 pickup. i have been driving it for 6 days with no issues.
yesterday coming down the highway at about 100km/h it just shut off, I coasted to the side and came to a stop to see if anything looked wrong. When it stopped I turned the key and it started back up. Ran fine for the rest of the evening. went to hockey came out, it started. went to eat came out. it started. went for a coffee, came oout and it started and idled around 600ish. then went to give it some gas to bring the idle up it died. Then that was it it wouldn't start again.

Any suggestions. this is my first time owning a toyota and I don't know what to look for??? Possible AFM problems?? whats comon??

Thanks
Corey

If its not carbed check your Air filter and intake. Clogged injectors. Bad Gas from a cheap station. You might have a faulty Coil. Mine randomly didn't start sometimes a while back and i checked the plugs and wire and there was no fire. Thus the coil. If its none of those then check your exhuast system. If none of that its deeper and don't wanna make you spend anything too much lol. But yea check those things. I don't think its your battery of Altrnator or else it would not even start.

my '89 did the same thing and it ended up being the signal generator (pickup coil in the distributor).

so i been poking around and searching the net like crazy. Now i cracked the 7th injector loose and cranked it and got no gas.
I have also put a new fuel filter on. Then i went to the tank and seen the wires coming from the top, figuing that one of them would be power to the pump. put the test light on there and got nothing. Checked all the fuses and they all test good. Is there a relay for it??

I think its the distrobutor or coil. If the engine is turing over yet its not starting then its not getting gas or fire. one of the 2. If you turn your key to on but not start it and go under the tuck and listin for the fuel pump its sould make more less a humming sound. that means its working. check your plug wires. take them off and put a screw driver in there and see it there is any spark or arching. you will know. sounds like it runs fine. just and ignition issue. distributor cap, rotor button, coil, plugs/plug wires.

By "7th injector", I assume you mean the cold start injector? The one on the pass. side of the intake plenum?

Yes, there is a relay. If you tested the correct wire to the pump and there's no voltage with the key on, then the relay is a strong possibility. They can work intermittently before they finely just crap out.

There is a way to hot wire your fuel pump directly to the battery bypassing the relay and ignition circuit. I'm not sure on your year of vehicle how it's done, though. Do you have a grey diagnostic box under the hood on the pass. side fender well? Would be right next to the fuse box.

But, if you checked the cold start injector AND the correct wire, got neither gas or voltage, it sounds more like the ignition circuit.

Start with the fuel filter. It's cheaper. Go from there.

I had a similar problem, it ended up being the distributor. One of the coils went bad. You check engine light should be on. Check for codes.

Check your wires on top of the frame running to the tank.

There's a nice spot that looks open and tow truck drivers like to chain it down here - which crushes the wires and can break the insulation.

Happened to me, behaved just like you describe. I cut and spliced the wires and all was good.

Might be a rare thing but it's worth a look.
