I could use some help with a no start issue, I was driving home from a trip and the truck (88 2wd pickup 22re auto 144.000km-89.000mi) started losing power, I dropped from O/D to 3rd which helped but the engine finally quit, it fired up about 3 times ran for a short time before dying, now it won't fire at all, engine has great spark and really good compression, I tried spraying gas into the throttle body with no success, now I'm wondering what to check next? I'm thinking fuel system but might need to borrow a few tools for that, could it be something between the throttle body and the injectors?
Only "thing" between the TB and the injectors, is the ECU. Unlikely possibility.
Easy to check whether there's fuel under pressure. Pull the return hose off the FPR, place a clear section of hose on it, into a graduated container. Normal is about .5 Liters in 30 seconds, IIRC. Be careful about any spills!
Could easily be the fuel pump has failed, or the COR. You can check the COR quickly by turning the key to "Start", but don't press the clutch, or the Clutch Cancel button. You should be able to hear the fuel pump running. If not, most likely the COR, at least the Start half of it, is bad.
Alternatively, put a jumper into the test jack, between B+ and Fp pins. If you hear the fuel pump running when the key is in On, and the truck starts properly, it's the COR or the switch in the MAF. I would bet the COR. Do NOT operate the vehicle on the road with the jumper in!!
Thanks a lot 2ToyGuy. I was going to pull the tank and fuel pump today but decided to do more testing. the EFI Main relay does click with the key on.
Resistance between terminals 1 and 2 is 71.6 ohms. they want 60 ohms +/- 20. between 3 and 4 is Infinity? I'm not sure what reading this is, my ohm meter sits at 1 on the ohm setting and while testing the 3/4 the meter didn't register anything.
The circuit opening relay is showing 9.52 volts when cranking.
Resistance between STA & E1 is 22. they want 17 - 25. Between +B & Fc is 111. they want 88 - 132. Between +B & Fp is Infinity, again on my ohm meter I get 1 and no other readings.
Fuel pump, fuel filter clogged, bad wiring back to the fuel pump, or bad connector(s) on the hanger assy. My bet would be the fuel pump, especially if you can't hear it running. Having said that, make sure you have power to the hanger on the tank the fuel pump hangs on. If you do, and I bet you do, you can pull the hanger off, and check the power at the pump.
Check any fuses involved too. It'd be expensive to replace the pump, only to find a bad fuse involved someplace.
