Trany issues, clutch slipping??

Hi guys,

So Here's my problem.
It started about 3 weeks ago. When I drive, 1st and 2nd gear works fine, no weird noises, but when I accelerate in 3rd to 4th gear, the engine makes a high rev sound, and I lose power, (all the way into 5th gear). I can't climb hills, or even accelerate normally on a flat stretch of road. I noticed that if I let off the gas pedal enough, the rev sound goes away and it's a normal engine sound, yet still I have no power. I thought it was maybe a clog somewhere, i.e, the air intake. But then again, it only happens in third to fifth.
At about 400k miles, we had to have the rear dif. (and axle...?) replaced by a Ford ranger's axle. Also had trany work I believe. (It's got 458k on it now).
I read else where on the forum that one guy had similar symptoms, and it was his cat. converter and muffler.
I thought it was spark plugs and wires, because as I examined the wires, they were melted. Figured it was piston failure. But no, the problem is still here.
I also just patched up the muffler with muffler tape about the same time this problem just happened.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

if you want help we need to know more about your truck, year, model, engine, tranny, ect.

OK, it's a 93 Yota Pick up, 22re engine. As I said, the back end, (rear dif., and axle), was replaced by a Ford Ranger's. Engine hasn't been rebuilt, has 458k miles on it. Just changed the trany oil last year. I'm not certain on the rest of the trany's history. We got it from a friend who did't want it anymore. We got it from him when the he said the "back end fell out". My dad took it to a shop and got the Ford Ranger's axle/whatnot put on. It was like 4 years ago though, so I can't remember all the details, and it wasn't mine at that point. (My dad just gave it to me about a month ago as my first truck).
Anything else I'm missing?

Hello Master Chief. Prior Sailor myself. The slipping in higher gears is a sign of a clutch on its way out. I got an Aisin Clutch from Rockauto not to long ago. Staying with factory parts goes along ways on these trucks.

I had to answer the phone and didnt complete what else I was going to mention. It would seem that it would slip in the lower gears with more of a load but in my experience it slips at higher RPMs.

I would check and make sure the slave cylinder down by your starter isnt leaking and functioning correctly.

Since you have a ranger axle in it, I am assuming you have a 2 wheel drive. Harbor Freight has a tranny jack for a reasonable price, but a 2 wheel is light enough that I have used a regular jack.

You will want to get the flywheel resurfaced which around here is about $25 to have done and when installing the flywheel bolts, use blue locktite on them. Not to bad of a job. Spend some time at the carwash to make the job cleaner and easier to work on in my opinion. A Haynes Manual is really good about doing the job.

Yep, I got me a Haynes manual. Thanks for all the help. You mean car wash as in wash out the undercarriage/trany to make it easier?
And yes, it's a two wheel drive.

The underneath side and the bell housing area. Otherwise I wind up with half the dirt in my eyes. On a two wheel drive, I personally pull the motor and tranny in piece as it makes it easier to connect the tranny to the motor. Putting a tranny in from the bottom side is one of my least favorite things to do. I can have a engine and tranny out quick but that is just me. Also makes it easier to fix any leaks and other issues while out.

As new as it is it is probably a 5 speed, if it is a 4 sped an 83 Celica tranny bolts right in and gets better mileage.

Yep it's a 5 speed. I'm just a bit nervous though. Never did any trany work ever. Newbie to the second power in that area, lol

You would be better off just doing just the tranny then. It is easily done, I would plan on 6 hours easy for your first time. These are easy trucks to work on. One project at a time and you will get the hang of it in no time. These trucks get abused and neglected but it doesnt take much to get them back into shape.

Several issues that come up, I have posted in my 88 Runner build link below that is easily fixed and not much cost at all. Even though I have an earlier model, most applies to your truck.

Can anyone give me advice on my '92 V6 22RE stick shift that has a leaky trans that after filling up with trans oil it still sqeaks in first?

Well, it could be a bad trany gasket. You say it's squeaking? I dunno, possibly a trany going bad?? Terry here above could be of more use.
Oh, and to update my problem above, I got it fixed. It was the clutch, totally worn out. I replaced it along with the flywheel and other jazz and it runs like a song now, no high reving, and all kinds of power restored! Thanks all!!

Glad to hear you got your tranny fixed masterchief.

4Runnerlily... Where is it leaking at? if at the drive shaft flanges, those seals can be had for $20 each. There is a gasket that is easily replaced on the front of the tranny. I have not worked on a V6 tranny but I bet it is the same. Check to see if all of your bolts are nice and tight. There is a seal inbetween the tranny and tcase that is cheap from Toyota.
