Question Transmission won't come off??????

I'm in the middle of changing the clutch in my truck and I have everything apart and unbolted and I go to slide the transmission off, and what do you know, it slides out far enough to where you can see the fly wheel, but then won't come off anymore, it feels like it should just slide right off but it won't!!! WTF??? What could it be?? The fly wheel looks to be rusted pretty badly, I have no idea if that could have anything to do with it. Has anyone else had this problem before??

I had trouble getting my tranny separated for a clutch job myself. I had no rust, just really tight tolerances.

To solve the problem, I hooked one end of a heavy ratchet strap to the rear out put flange of the transfer and the other to the out put flange on the rear diff.

Just started ratcheting and it came off really smooth.

Not saying that is the best was to solve your problem... but it worked well for me.

LOL....oh yeah! Number of threads on it. Try searching tranny removal, transmission stuck, etc. Play with the keywords 'til you find the info. It's all there with lots of tips on how to get it off. It's no big deal. It will come off. It's just binding on the input shaft of the tranny.

I used a ratchet strap, also.....but, to the rear axle.

A bigger hammer and prybar come in real handy, but if it's binding anything you try will be that much harder. Basically what you have to do is play with the height of the motor in relation to the tranny and it's angle....and vice versa. A bottle jack under the motor works well. With tension on the tranny assembly using a ratchet strap, once the motor and tranny are lined up (freeing the shaft) it will start pulling apart. Just keep tightening the strap and so on...

I know this may seem obvious, but did you remove all the bolts.

Try pushing the clutch release fork in like you were disengaging the clutch. Sometimes they bind up on the throwout bearing.

I found that wiggling it by grabbing the transfer case helps when pulling it out and when putting it back in. (yeah I know)

Dang you mean you're supposed to take the bolts off before dropping the transmission???? haha yeah it slides off to the point where you can see the fly wheel teeth but then it doesn't go anymore...

Red face

well if your sure every thing is disconnected .

It is not hanging up on the floor of the truck the top of the bell housing loves to do that

Most often a few good pulls will have it come right out.

Years ago had this problem was a wiring harness attachment up on the upper right side I missed although every thing was unplugged .

It was a real pain fixing those wires.

just be careful
