Transmission Swap CA Smog
Figured I'd post this since it is often asked regarding smog. I have an 87 pickup that was a 22re/auto. Last year I swapped the auto out for a w56c.
Today I took it to Las Positas Junior College in Livermore CA. I had made an appointment to get it checked out, then thinking I would not be able to pass the visual smog test. Well I talk to the ref about what I did. He immediately refered to vehicle speed sensors. I told him my truck was cable driven as an auto, same with the manual. He asked about adapters. I then told him I used a standard toyota transmission offered back then. He looked at it, and then told me I don't need a sticker to smog my truck.
He mentioned that swapping manual to auto needs inspection. He mentioned that they test to make sure the converter will lock up.
So other then manual to auto trans swaps, and engine swaps. You don't need to go to the ref, as long as the parts are factory. I'm sure there are more refined details to that but for my case I'm good to go. I just need to buy a new cat and I'm good as gold.
BTW, smogging at the college, they only charge for the cert. I called 1-800-622-7733 to make my local appointment.
