Transmission / Starter Problems???

I have a 92' 4runner V6 4WD automatic transmission 195K and initially I was having problems with the transmission engaging from a stopped position (ie acting like it was in neutral) but would engage after a few seconds. This was a random thing that didn't consistently happen at any particular time (warm or cold). I had it looked at by multiple transmission shops that could not diagnose anything. One mechanic had mentioned a neutral safety/start switch could cause the shifting problem. I did not replace it because it was only a guess. Next (months later), a completely different problem happened, the yota would not start or even turnover to try and start. So I checked the battery, fuses, wiring, and just today the starter was replaced...still nothing...not even a turnover...just clicking. I looked at a repair manual that again mentioned the neutral safety switch may contribute to not starting and no turning over. So before I go out and special order this part...Has anyone else experienced these problems? Or does anyone have some helpful knowledge about these switches? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

James

To test if it is the neutral saftey switch, look in your manual and locate the switch, you should be able to bypass the switch with a simple wire with a couple connectors.

I had this problem a long time a go in my chevelle.

Test it by bypassing it and if it starts up then replace it. Dont leave it bypassed, it will alow the truck to start in any gear and your reverse lights will be on all the time, which will get you a ticket for white light in hte rear.

good luck.
