Transmission Slipping When Hot -- Need Help Diagnosing
Hey guys,
Recently bought a 1995 4runner 3.0L with 4x4 auto that has high miles, 250k on it. Got it cheep because it had a blown head gasket. I did the head job and now the engine is purring like a kittin. However trans is a different story.
The 4runner seems to drive nicely for like 5 mins. untill it heats up. Then the transmission starts slipping and eventually won't go uphill but seems to still drive on flat ground but the slightest hill will make it stop. When its warmed up, I'll press the gas and it will try to move but won't go no where.
Checked the trans fluid by cycling through all gears ending in park and its fine. Trans fluid is the normal red color, not brown, burnt or have metal filings in it. So I'm kinda stumped If the trans is bad isn't the fluid suppose to be brownish??
When I did the head gasket job I didn't take time to properly label all the vacuum hoses. Labeled some but not all of them. So I might have some in the wrong place. Would that affect the trans and the slipping issue?
Any help would be appreciated!! Just don't know where to go from here. How hard is it to replace the 4x4 auto trans on these trucks? Could it be a solenoid in the trans or the torque converter? Thanks!

it's probably not the vacuum.
Since you did a head gasket job, you must have the FSM. The FSM has a good diagnosis setup for the transmission (particularly the manual shift test). http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...2/troubles.pdf You should check for codes (always!), but that doesn't sound like your problem.

Thanks Scope for the reply. That file will help me alot. I've got the Haynes manual which doesn't really have good info on the trans.
New Question: My 4wd low works fine. No slipping when I've got that engaged. However 2wd and 4wd high both slip. Anybody know what that means??
