Transmission removal
I am about to remove the transmission from my son's 91 4-Runner to replace a slipping clutch.
Are there any good tips as to how to get this heavy transmission out in a home workshop (ie no 4-post hoist!)?

The first time I removed a tranny I thought i could do it without a tranny jack. Yeah I did it but I was extremely sore for weeks after. I recommend that you spend the 30 bucks for renting a jack and it will make life a whole lot easier. About 10 hours to do my 1st tranny removal, takes about an hour and a half now.

This is a Tranny jack that you can rent at most any rental center. What is does is kind of supports all sides of the transmission, it adjust not only up and down but the level forward and back by a control knob. Also it allows you to use tie down straps to secure the transmission to the jack. It makes life a whole lot easier when removing or installing the tranny. The cost was about $16 a day.

I just pulled mine out, it was a bit heavy..Probally couldnt have done it without having a 4" lift. I needed a friend and my brother to get it back it.
I am pulling my tranny out next month to change the clutch and WILL be renting a tranny jack. Floor jacks are too much work to keep it balanced.

If you have a good floor jack, this item works really well and is cheap.
