transmission problems

I don't post here too often but i've had some problems with my auto transmission on my 4 cyl 86 runner. I know this may belong in newbie tech but i saw a thread on here that sounded simliar to my problems.
I've had my 4runner for...2 months now i believe, and knew the tranny was a little off, but i bought it from a master technician and was going ot have him swap it with a 5 speed for my. however, i never did.
When i leave it in drive from the very start it works fine for 1st gear, which usually puts me at about 15 mph. However, when it's supposed to go into 2nd it transfers into i'm not sure what with low rpms, and speed. I really ahve no idea about transmission problems so i'm not gonna try and guess on what's wrong with it here, so i was lookin for some help with this.
in the previous thread things about the solenoids were mentioned.

PS. for mine i end up just putting it in 2, which allows it to go from 1st to 2nd, then tapping it forward into D usually around 25-30, and it then appears to be in 3rd.
thanks

If you're missing/skipping 2nd gear, first thing to check is solenoid No. 2.

If you have any codes, the OD light will blink while driving.
Ground the small square plug beside the coil. Switch ignition on, don't start, make sure the OD button is on, and the light will blink.

here are the codes.

i would like ot check for the codes but it seems that my OD light isn't working. Mine is located just under next to the stock stereo deck location, and with the car on i can flick the OD button on and off but the light stays off. any common problems or suggestions with this?
