transmission problem. accelerate car dont want to move.

hey im new to this forum,
i have a 89 toyota ext cab 4X4 automatic v6. the tranny was slipping so i took it to the friends brother in law (mechanic) and they swap a new tranny on the car, still have the same problem the car grabs sometimes and sometimes the car doesnt go but the engines revs. It happens on and off. He thought it was the tranny again so he swapped it the second time tonight, test drive it same thing happened, he also changed the throttle cable, checked the sensors, and supposedly he said the overdrive is fine. so if u guys have any idea what can be the problem please let me know so we can fix this truck asap. he think its something with the computer now. so hoping we can find someones ECU and drop it in and see if that saves the problem? let me know, from my understanding the tranny has nuthin electronic besides the overdrive solonoid? anyways im new and not an mechanic.

thankz
regards,
ed

sounds like shift solenoids maybe, try pulling the diagnostic codes and watch the O/D light. The flashes will tell you what is going on in the tranny, and which if any solenoids are going.

Since you said you already replace the transmission, I doubt it's the solenoids, unless you are very unlucky. Are you sure you have enough ATF in the system? Did you check out your torque converter, it could be the cause as well. If you put the transfer case in 4H or 4LOW, does it change anything?

Check your TPS (throttle posistion sensor) I know when these are bad or out of adjustment they play havoc on the auto tranny shifting. My old 85 xtracab with auto started acting up one day like it was slipping really bad. I thought at first was the shift soleniods but a dealer mechanic suggested checking the TPS. Swapped it with a spare and was shifting like new again... Wouldve never have thought of that myself.

hmmm...I dunno how educated this sounds but it sounds similar to when my rear drum brakes were sticking. It just sticks when i stopped...and i really had to gun it to get it going.
someone might want to specify

I'd be interested in the verdict as well...just for knowledge sake. A couple months ago my mother's Stanza just stopped. Engine would rev but no motion forward or reverse. Turned out it was stripped splines in the torque converter. $500 for new "splines".

Mine does it too, but only when taking off uphill. Fully loaded 18-wheelers are pulling me on an uphill take off! I was thinking it's the torque converter, but now I don't know (with the information that's in this thread). I had the transmission fluid changed but that didn't solve anything - but I doubt that the fluid would be low now. Could it be the TPS or a shift solenoid if it only happens uphill? And how difficult is it to replace a shift solenoid?

This may sound crazy, but I had a similar, intermittent acceleration problem when I first purchased my 92 3.0 w/ A340H auto tranny. I was SURE it was the tranny going out. Sometimes it would accelerate just fine. Other times the engine would rev,, but not really 'pull'. Still other times, it would pull and stop, pull and stop,, jerking and bucking like the gears were not 'holding'. Funny thing,, the tach didn't seem to be bouncing up and down thru the rev range in concert with the going and stopping. The jerking was so violent, that some of the plastic around the shifter base broke off and I can now see down into the tranny tunnel ! It wouldn't get out of its own way, on an uphill take off.

Strangely enough, it turned out to be a failing fuel pump. Pulls like a champ now. That has been just over two years ago.

Gotta make sure the engine is working properly, before you can diagnose any potential tranny problems.

Doubt it's the fuel pump. I've got the revs to go with the slippage. But the engine runs like ass anyway, so anything's worth checking out. Is there an easy way to test the fuel pump?
