What kind of transmission Fluid would my 1995 4runner sr5 4wd need?

That depends on how much your able to get out of it. Are you just going to pull one of the drain plugs or 2 or 3?

 

i replacing the transmission filter...so i drained all the fluid out..i just dont know how much i need to put back in?

 

Its almost impossible to get it all out, even if you pulled out all 3 drain plugs. Did you do that? If you just dropped the main pan and not the small one and didn't pull out the transfer case plug you'll probably need about 5 quarts. That A340H holds about 10 quarts IIRC.

 

yea i just to out the one pan where the filter is..theres 3 plugs haha i find new things out everyday...

Be careful not to over fill it. You need to check to level with the engine running in park after moving the shifter though all the choices. Cold will get you close but it needs to be at normal operating temps to get your final reading.

Be careful when working on the A340H. Everything doesn't refill using the dipstick.

You can pull the plugs and drain the transmission pan (large one where the tranny filter is that you've already removed. This pan holds around 6 quarts), and you can drain the transfer case pan (the small one just to the rear of the large tranny pan. This pan holds just over 1 quart). When you add fluid to the tranny dipstick tube, it will fill both of these pans.

Now, the transfer chain case is separate. The drain and fill plugs are at the rear of the transfer case (24mm heads on the plugs, I think). The chain case takes just over 1 quart of Dex III ATF also. You pull the fill plug, pull the drain plug, let the old fluid drain, install the drain plug, and add ATF to the fill hole until it overflows, then you close the fill plug (same way you change diff fluid.)

By the way... you don't need to replace the filter unless it's damaged. You can remove it, clean it with brake cleaner, let it dry, then re-install it with a new gasket.
