Transmission

Lost the synchros for third gear in my 94. Looks like it’ll be just as cheap to get a new transmission as having a shop fix it. Is there any reason to go to another transmission, than the W56 that is currently in there? It is still a stock pickup with the 22RE.

Thanks

Thanks, that is what I was thinking, just wasn’t sure if there was a 6-speed that would make it even better.

I would recommend Marlin Crawler for a reman, those guys are specialists in toyota transmissions. Prices aren’t that bad either.

However if you have access to a press to reassemble the transmission, rebuilding them isn’t very hard if your organized about it and take a LOT of pictures and videos. A rebuild kit on Marlin Crawler was about $300 for me, rockauto was about $150 I think.

If a reman is too much and you don’t feel like rebuilding a tranny, might be worth checking out your local junkyards. Any truck that has been wrecked most likely has an intact transmission. I’ve also seen pretty good deals on ebay, craigslist, and FB marketplace. (much harder to find on the last two but i’ve seen them)

Started with the junk yards and no luck there. Haven’t checked ebay to much because I’m nervous it wouldn’t be correct. I looked at Marlin crawler, but the 12 week lead time and only 1 year warranty steered me away. Wish I had the tools and time to do it myself, would make it a lot better. The reason DaveZ got my attention is because of the 2 year warranty and only a 4-6 week lead time. Than I got to thinking is, with any of them, if I have troubles with the transmission are they going to pay for shipping if it goes bad under warranty and how long would it take for a replacement? So should I try to find something closer to home? I am hoping to turn this into my daily driver, so would hate to have it quit on me again with no second rig available.

With Marlin crawler I would not be worried whether it would work or not, the quality is definitelythere with them. However the 12 week lead time if you can wait might be worth it and just double clutch to third for the time being. You also don’t have to ship your transmission until you receive the new one.

Ive personally have not had luck with any local manual transmission shops in my town. we have two guys, one you have to babysit him and the transmission for him to do any work to it, the other guy charges more that it would cost for an auto rebuild and is very difficult about everything. But that’s just my town.

With that other place you found I would just look into all the reviews and see what people say. Or if your in NC there’s a classic toyota truck junkyard out in Kipling not many know about.

Came across a ‘90 4Runner with a 5 speed Aisin r150, would this bolt up to my 94 pickup? Would I have to get different drive shafts?

I'm not to keen on engines or transmissions from wrecking yards, especially if you are having a shop do the installation. Unless you're simply looking for a rebuildable core. With a junkyard transmission you could very well end up paying labor more than once if the used unit has issues. There's a very good reason why most automotive shops won't source out used parts, and are reluctant to even install ones supplied by customers.(I said most, not all)
Marlin would be a good choice if you don't want to undertake the overhaul yourself.

There’s next to nothing for junkyard parts in my area. Been watching Craigslist with a little luck. If I can pick up a good used transmission, I’d swap it myself. Would really like to find a donor truck with a good tranny so I could rebuild the motor for when my motor goes next. That seems like a good pipe dream at the moment.

I shopped around and just bit the bullet and ordered a rebuilt W56 from Marlin, they have a 10% coupon right now and they told me the times are down to 4-6 weeks for the transmission rebuild, after getting my core back to them and with shipping it’s around $1200 which is not much more than what everybody else wants. Plus got whatever the HD treatment is as an option . Everything I have ever gotten from them has been top notch so I figured why not .

Thats a good called. Once a shop has "rebuilt" your trans, its all sealed up and you have no way of knowing what they did right or wrong. Going with a reputable shop is worth the price.

Bear in mind, though, that "reputable" has more to it than a name. Like, it used to be Aamco was considered "reputable". I took a Chevy Luv I owned into the one in Yuma. It had the problem where it would drift out of 4th slowly if I didn't hold it in gear as I drove along. Not a show stopper, but a PITA.
I got it back, and a small tool box and jack I had kept behind the seat were missing, and it had the same problem. Only now, I not only had to hold it in gear, but it would no longer go into 4WD!
They took an operable transmission, and made it much worse, as well as stealing from me. After all this, they wanted $1200.00! I refused to pay them unless they took it back and actually fixed it, as well as giving me back my property. They refused, and threatened to take me to court about it. I told them to go ahead, I looked forward to it. I never heard another word from them.

So a "name" doesn't make a shop any good at all. Ask around, find as many as you can to ask about the shop you're interested in.

Just wanted to throw this out there...
Pat☺

Would a tranny from a 2wd work? It’s the same year and motor, just 2wd.

Thanks
