Transfer case, where's this spring go?

Finishing up a transmission rebuild on my 89 pickup 4x4 this weekend.
When I taking off the shift linkage cover for the transfer case this spring flung itself out and I'm not sure how it's supposed to go back in.
Anybody know what orientation it's supposed to go back in?

The FSM I have doesn't mention anything about a spring. Looks like its for some sort of shift linkage return i'm guessing??

It goes on the bottom of the shifter base. If you look at the base you will see 2 holes that the ends of the spring fit in.

DOH! I spent longer than I care to admit fiddling around with the wrong side.
Appreciate the help!
