Take out the shift lever and make sure it is in the right groove. The left shift rod should be all the way forward and the right shift rod should be back, with the shift fork in the groove that the right makes. Hope that makes sense. Maybe some one will post a pic and a better explanation. It should make sense after you take it apart?

The left most shift rod needs to be all the way back, thats 2Hi. The right hand shift rod needs to be all the way forwards to be disengaged.

If you push the left shift rod to the front, thats 4Hi, and the stick should swing back and forth as it passes through the notches in the shift rods. The right shift rod is 4Hi --> Neutral --> 4lo.

I'm pretty sure it's not stuck in 4 wheel drive because even when I lock the hubs in it doesn't feel like its in 4 wheel drive its just stuck and feels like it just really sloppy and won't move very much if that makes sense

Pop the cover and look. From the sound of it, you have an overhaul on your hands. see Marlin Crawler for parts & kits.

Remove the 4 bolts that hold the shifter base to the top of the transfer case (assuming it is a top shift case) and see where the shift rails are lined up. Sounds like the end of the shifter has popped out of the two slots in the shift rails and if so, it won't shift right. In 4H, the two shift rails slots should both be forward and lined up. When you stab the shifter end back into them, just make sure the end goes into the two adjoining slots and not in the spacer behind them.

Pop the shift cover ( 4bolts) and visually see where the shift rods are. See picture above.
Jack up the front and verify both hubs are locking. Lock one and turn, verify CV shaft rotation. reverse for other side. this verifys your hubs are working. Turn driveshaft with both hubs locked and both wheels should turn.

After that its shift linkage.

If your chain were broken, the front driveshaft would lockup from the chain being wrapped around the gear. or it would fall down and the front driveshaft will spin freely.

But I think to break a chain you would have had to work at it.

Go get a junkyard unit. Less hassle & faster to fix. Couple of hours to R&R unit. By the time you order parts and tear that unit down find out what you broke you'll be down for a awhile.
