Trans swap/backup lights/cruise control
I just purchased a 1986 RTE truck that the previous owner had swapped out the auto trans for a 5 speed. He said that he never could get the reverse lights or the cruise control working after the swap. I am sure that for the lights it is just getting the right wires hooked up again, but the cruise control I know nothing about. Does the auto use the same brain and speed sensor as the manual? There also must be a switch plumbed in series from the clutch to the brake switch as well. Has anyone done this swap that could point me in the right direction?
Thanks, Tim

I can't believe that no one out there has never done a auto to 5 speed swap before and not encountered these problems. I hope to have the time soon to figure this out myself. I will post my findings when everything is working.

I would agree with you about the wiring of the rear lights... I never had a problem with it...
On the Cruise Control I didn't have it before but putting the brains in was pretty simple and I think this would probably just be a wiring issue as well. Can you hear the relay click when you initiate it (probably have to do it with the truck turned off and key in the ignition in order to hear the relay)?

I finally tracked down these problems. Both were wire related. When the swap was made the back up light wire was cut somewhere between the switch and the power source. Ran a new hot wire from the accessory circut and all works fine. I knew that the cruise cotrol is wired through the neutral saftey switch in a A/T so that if you shift the A/T into neutal with the cruise set, it cancels the signal. The same pin on the brain is wired to a clutch switch for a M/T for the same reason. Well that original wire was grounded somewhere in the truck, so I pulled that pin and ran a new wire to a clutch pressure switch and the cruise works perfect. The FSM has a lot of test that seam a bit confusing at first, but they work. Took about 1/2 day to run down.
