tranny won't shift when cold

I wanted to know if anyone else has this problem with there 90-95 runners. since i bought it in april, it has always has had this problem with the auto tranny that won't let it shift into 4th gear until the engine is warm. Now that winter is nearing here in the sunshine state, it takes even longer for the engine to warm up, so I have to ride longer in third gear revving the engine up to about 3 or 4 thousand rpm when I get on the highway. i've done a tune up on the tranny and topped off the fluid. is this normal or what? also just wondering what the average gas mileage is. im getting about 220 miles to the tank. and does anyone ever get a noise coming from this engine when your driving down the freeway. kinda like a exaust leak or something? cant figure that out either.

Sounds like average gas mileage. Mine takes a while to shift into overdrive also, check the cooling system, thermostat etc. the ECM won't let it go to OD unless the vehicle is warmed up.

sometimes the inside of the the hose at the rear of the engine that senses the temp gets a little gummed up. Try and remove it and clean it. If you do a search you should find something about it on here.

I'm pretty sure that's normal...most auto overdrive trannys won't go into OD until the car is warm, 'cuz it's tough on the trans.

That sounds pretty normal.
The tranny won't shift into O/D until it's "warm"..

Do what I did, get a block heater, it helps it warm up a little faster and you get easier starsts and instant heat in the morning.

+I have all the "problems" you've described.... Except I live in NY so its so much colder up here... I usually have to drive more than 10 miles before the engine warms up!
+I get approximately 300 miles/tank... depending on where I drive.
+When I get to 45-50mph and let off the gas I hear a loud noise and the truck vibrates a little. The muffler's new, I have yet to determine what it might be.

B.) as far as the gas mileage goes that seems good. I have a lift and bigger tires and I get about 180-210 to the tank. I ran out of gas once at 200M so that's my baseline. I still need to do a major tune-up on it too as soon as I get it back.

I have not had this problem AS OF YET, BUT STILL COLD WEATHER TO COME.
I didnot have my rig last winter, so this winter will be a 1st for me with the runner. I do tho seem to have a problem with my 3rd gear. It will not shift out of 3rd gear till around 45mph. Is this normal. It really bugs me not knowing. And answer would be great.

The A340H transmission will not shift into OD and the torque converter will not lockup until the engine coolant (as read by the ECT sensor in the coolant bypass at the rear of the engine) reaches a temperature of 70 degrees C (158 degrees F).

This was also answered here a couple of days ago.
