If i can not shift into 4 wheel high at all, but can into 4 wheel low and 2wd would it most likely be a probelm with the transfer case or tranny?

Vehicle?

How do you shift to 4-lo but not 4-hi when you have to go through 4-hi to get into the low range?

Check the fluid?

Its a v6 manual 92. So i take it that the answer to my question is its the tranny case.

I was a little mistaken so here is the new info,

but here is the deal went outside shifted into 4hi and tried to turn the front drive shaft didnt turn. Shifted into 4low and shaft did not turn. So i turned on the car and shifted into 4hi and released clutch and nothing was engaging. Shifted into 4 low and released clutch and it engaged. Hopefully that makes sense. So basically when engaging the clutch in 4hi nothing is happening.

ok, so you're saying that when you put the transmission into 1st gear(or some gear) and the transfercase into 4hi and let the clutch out nothing happened??? You then put into 4lo and let the clutch out with the transmission in gear and the truck started moving???

Do you have manual hubs or automatic hubs? I'd assuming with the auto hubs that you have the ADD stuff on the front axle.

na manual hubs and yes you stated your assumption right above. Hubs are fine, cant turn drive shaft when in 4hi, just not engaging when releasing clutch. Im thinking i just lost a gear in the transfer case?????

I guess you can try and pop the cover on the transfercase and see what's up with the shift rails. You might also be able to see if there's teeth chewed up. I think you have a chain drive case too. I figure you would be able to hear grinding or whirring if something wasn't meshing. Have you pulled the drain plug to check for fluid/metal? Are you sure that the transfercase isn't in neutral?

Unlock your hubs. With the transfercase in 2hi the front driveshaft should turn. With the transfercase in 4hi and the tranny in gear it shouldn't turn because it's now tide in with the tranny.

It's a pretty easy task as long as you have the facilties and tools. Give post #12 a shot when you get a chance and let us know what you come up with!

I saw making sure you didn't have your Xfer case in Neutral mentioned.

Have you checked that to make sure your not in Neutral? Neutral is right before 4L, so maybe you think your in 4H, but really in Neutral. This is neutral on the xfer case not the transmission.
