exactly, when the engine is running, it's spinning the input shaft, which slings oil all over the t-case.
when you are flat towing, the rear wheels will spin the driveshaft, but no oil is being thrown around the t-case.
that's why on my 90, toyota recommends up to 30 miles flat tow before the seals go out and further damage will occur.
it's best to disconnect the driveshaft and spend the 30 minutes of doing this and prevent uncessesary $$$ fixing it afterwards...

Right. This is another reason putting the Tcase in 2hi and the trans in neutral works best. Like I said, I can attest to thousands of miles towed this way and no ill effects.
