Towing and my 93 3VZ-E
#22
Well, the verdict is in and I'm doing the 5.0 swap.
Ford parts are so cheap and easy to find that it is silly. I know where I can go and pluck 5.0 motors all day long for $100 a pop and AOD trannies for even less. Hell, I even have a guy local giving me an AOD tranny. I will end up buying the adapter for the AOD to Toy transfer case and some other conversion parts.
It will take plenty of time and lots of research but the amount of money shouldn't be very bad at all.
Wish me luck.
EDIT: Selling my running 3VZ-E and other parts will probably pay for most of the swap.

55-60 is comfortable, 65-70 is hard to do. 70+... HA! you better be drafting going down hill.
ive made ohhhh...3 trips in the above in the past 2 years. My truck pulls it much better (5spd with 4.56) but i cant fit the wife, the gear, and the dogs all in it.

The 302 swap has been done but I believe other mods like relocation of the radiator were necessary. Scott Ellinger of Rockstomper has done it.
Ford makes solid powertrains. Ford's 3.0 V6 is light years better then our 3VZE. However, Toyota has that awesome stiff chassis. Have you considered the 4.0L Ford V6? My sister has put hundreds of thousands of towing miles on the old 3.0L in her old 89 Ranger and the 4.0L in her current 99 Ranger. The engines and transmissions were and are very robust. The V6 while probably more expensive might make an easier fit.
