Just a quick question. Would a 1995 4Runner 4WD with factory towing package be able to handle towing a '95 Trans Am on a Uhaul Tow Dolly? The Trans Am weighs about 3500lbs. Uhaul said that I'll need a heavier vehicle to tow with. I just want to know if it can be done?

U-haul wont even rent it to you.

be one hell of a fun drive. those dollys are way heavier than you think

 

It tow it, outta overdrive and maybe at 55mph but it will do it. I towed a 20ft boat and trailer with ease with the T100, not much more power there and more weight.

 

you would be extremely suprised at how much these things can actually tow. I know the rated capacity is something like 3700 lbs but by buddy has a 93 runner 3.0 auto and has done at least 5k on a few occasions, but it aint pretty. I guess none of that matters, though if uhaul won't rent it to you. Do you have a buddy with a fullsize so uhaul wont be a skeptical

 

Alot depends on vert change, elev and gears.
If towing more than once invest in Airlift airbags, to help coils when towing.
I sure won't wanna tow that car more than once w/ my rig.

I towed a slightly smaller car on a tow dolly with my 2000 'Runner with no problems. I also towed a Civic once. You might have a little issue getting the car on the dolly as the ground effects may get in the way. We had a rough time getting the Civic on one, and had to let the air out of the tires on the dolly.

I generally use the Sequoia for towing now...it tows my Jeep easily....don't even know it is back there!

 

Thanks for all the answers guys. I really don't car what Uhaul says. I just want some answers from the Enthusiasts. I just want to know if it can be done. I'll just end up telling them I'm towing my Cousin's Sentra. I mean come on, I remember when my uncle towed my old 87 Supra Turbo with his 95 4Runner.

And about the car scraping, im worried about the front being on the dolly and the angle being to high, therefore the rear scrapes all the way back to my house. =(

 

I towed an 87 4 runner 6 hours with my 95, 3.0, 5sp. The tow was from Fl. to SC, so no real elevation, but even slight grades were felt. I maintained 70 the whole way and kept good distances to the next car. The truck did it without complaint, never ran hot, and didn't use any oil. It had about 160,000 miles at the time. I told them I was towing a 2wd pick-up. They wont rent if you are towing a 4wd.

I pull a 2800lb boat/trailer combo with an '89 2wd pickup with a 22RE/A43 auto trans. She has about 50k original miles. I put in a three row radiator and an oversize aux trans cooler. The trailer has surge brakes. It pulls fine on the flats. Hills are another story completely. Slow going, at times.

If you have an automatic, put on a Trans cooler. Hayden is the brand I bought.

I have a '94 4runner 3.0 that pulled the boat fine. Hills will slow you down a lot if you are pulling that much weight. The HG blew on 3.0 at 226k after pulling the boat a bunch, so a 3.4 swap is under way, slowly. Do you want to put that much stress on a 12 year old 4runner? Are you prepared for an HG repair?

When I went to go get my boat, about 1900 mile round trip, I rented an pretty new F250 from United Rental. They do mostly construction equipment rental. Most of their business is during the week. I got a deal on a long weekend rental. I paid about 225.00 in '05 for a four day rental with 1900 miles clocked. I got better mileage than my 4runner, about 19-20, even pulling the boat.

 

+1. Dollys weigh about 1000lbs or more. Plus a 3500lb firebird=too much.

the tow trailers (double axle gigs) weigh like 3k lbs.

 

Pull over your vehicle weight limit on your vehicle and have a wreck...you will find yourself in a deep pile.

Find a tow vehicle that has an adequate tow capacity for your needs and do not endanger the rest of us that share the road with you.

I might just end up Using a tow bar with a drop base on the tow hitch so I wont put any unwanted pressure on the Trans Am's bumper.

tow dolly = 650lbs.
tow vehicle must be atleast 750 lbs heavier than vehicle being towed.

 

If itsd a 4WD and an auto with the A340H, its 3500 lbs, if you have a 5 spd, its 5000#

 

I towed my 86 mustang with my 88 Toyota 2wd pick up (22r, 5spd).
Used a tow dolly from U-Haul and pulled it 360 miles with NO problem.

Was the 2 wheel kind where the dolly caries the two front wheels of the car being towed. U haul didn't seem to care what I was hauling or what I was towing with it... They just wanted it back for Monday

Might want to look into the tow capacity advice. Don't know if there would be trouble if something happened
