tires and water problems
thanks for the input on the tires. i bought the dayton timberline AT's because it was convenient.
Now i have bigger problems. my 86 22RE keeps making noise in the radiator like its running hot, but its not. it keeps kicking water out the overflow. on the resevor tube there is oil residue. there is no water in the oil, but i think i saw water dripping out the tailpipe while it was running. i have already replaced the thermostat and fan clutch because of other problems. head gasket?

For a second I thought you were saying that the tires started the problem.....My 22RE drips water from the tailpipe, but that's normal. I'm not sure what the problem is.

on the 7m's used in toyota's supras they have BHG issues and one good test is to get a test kit for exaust gasses in the coolant. if you are blowing oil into your coolant maybe theres exaust gas in there too. an emissions testing place might be able to test for the gas as well (its what they do)..
the kit you shouild find at local parts store for 50 bux.
have you felt your radiator delivery tube to see if it has a lot of pressure (really stiff) (edit...if your radiator cap is new, chances are its a given. check to make sure you have the right PSI cap...)
is water coming out of the exaust all the time or just on startup? condensation from heating the air in the exaust system is a natural occurence in all cars before the system reaches operating temp....and after an enthusiastic car wash.
keep track of your oil and look at the dipstick. drain some if necisary to look for murkyness or sludge.
since we're here and talking about BHG, is it at all common for the 22r? i'm looking at a 4runner and i dont want another car with BHG problems. havent heard of any major problems on the infamous engine though....this makes me wonder.
good luck man. BHG's are NOT fun, (had one on my supra) but its a do-it-yourself job if you're mechanically knoledgeable and can understand how things work. much cheaper that way too.

mine had 175k on it when i bought it, with a broke valve spring. still has good compression on the cylinders and i replaced the valve spring. it was a one owner, but the roughest one owner ive seen. he abused it so bad he let the windshield wiper blades wear out until the glass got deep scratches in it. i had a friend replace the windshield.
i think its a BHG, but it doesnt run hot. it keeps blowing water out the overflow and there is traces of oil in the overflow. oil stays clean though. im still driving it enjoying the new tires. i will try the radiator cap next.
