Are tire chains ok on he IFS? I know that if chains are put on some trucks with IFS that it will break parts. I wasn't sure about the Toyota IFS.

 

i put tire chains on my car. I think you'll be ok.

 

I thought so, I just wanted to be sure before I went out and bought some chains that I couldn't use.

 

why would you need to chain 4wd?? air down if you need more traction.

 

One hasen't really been stuck if one hasn't gotten stuck in 4 low w/ chains...

Chain it. You should be fine. Just make sure the chains have adequate clearance.

 

Well, where I live in Colorado the snow gets real deep in the winter. Ye Olde Toyota does really great in the snow without tire chains. In some instances while hunting Elk and Coyotes the snow is often up to the hood and the tire chains help, lots. Usually the truck floats across it, but its a just in case type of thing.

 

I would get chains. I think it is good insurance to have and the only reason i can see that would hurt your truck is if they are hooked up wrong or break and get bound up in your axle. If you pick up a quality set i think you will be happy.

4low and stuck with chains..... get out and walk away lol that rig isn't going anywhere.

 

Chains most certainly help in some conditions, we put them on IFS Chevy trucks at work all the time. A particularly wonderfull time to use chains is when there is 2 or 3 feet of new dry snow on top of 6 inches of ice. The snow packs the tire treads and then the studs and rubber can't grip the ice... We had 3 4x4 trucks stuck this winter and the only one that could even move around had chains on the IFS. It pulled the other 3 out...

 

I thought chains would be ok. I had a buddy that had an older Cherokee that had plastic gears, and chains destroyed the IFS. I was tryin to figure out if Toyota might be the same way. Hows the wheeling up there in Alaska?

 

Don't underestimate the power of 4 chains and 2 lockers, I was bombing around in my truck with one locker, one set of chains, through snow past my headlights.

NOTE Front chains are great while your going really slow but it makes things really sketchy if you ever have to brake because only your front end gets any traction and your rear end whips around on you. I'd only use front chains where there is deep enough mud or snow that swapping ends would be near impossible.
