Timing problem.

Ok so I got the timing belt on my truck and thought I had it all set right, but when I crank the truck up it idles around 500 and when I give it gas it just doesnt want to go at all, just creeps along. Does it matter rather are not u have the installation lines on the timing belt lined up properly? When I put the belt on I just lined one installation line up with the driver side cam mark. I had all my arrows pointed up, and I turned my crank pulley to 0.

Don't take this the wrong way, but if the timing belt had marks to aid you in getting everything lined up properly, you'd be silly to not take advantage of them... if not for the sole purpose of verification that it's all put together correctly without doubt. One tooth off on any one of the gears will affect how the engine runs and in particular, one tooth off on the crankshaft can make it not want to run well at all. And now you have an engine that's not running properly and a strong possibility that the cam timing is off.

A couple sayings I like to use are "measure twice, cut once" and "if there's time to go back and fix something, there was time to do it right in the first place". Both mean basically that you double check yourself before you commit to something otherwise it's a waste of time and materials and saves you the frustration when you make a mistake and have to do it over.

Dude look here, I'm looking for some help not a lecture. I have never done this before, so any advice will help. I was sure I had everything lined up correctly. I actually left the timing belt guide off, but I dont think this had anything to do with it. Basically I need to know how to set the timing.

Like I said, don't take it the wrong way... and you did.

So... some advice... umm....
Have you checked the ignition timing properly (with the TE1/E1 terminals in the diagnostic port jumpered)?

Ok I think I found my problem. I have been lining the square part on the crank gear up instead of the mark on the base of the gear with the oil pump alignment. According to this photo there is a good 15 degrees difference. Do you guys think this is why my truck was running so sloppy?
