I recently bought a 94 4runner with the 3.0 v6. It runs great but a little sluggish. I bought new wires, plugs, distributor cap and fuel filter and still no change. When I tried to set the timing it was set at what seemed to be 30 btdc. It was way off of the indicators. And yes, the diagnostic port was jumped. It ran terrible when I set it back to 10 and even 15 btdc and got about 10 miles to the gallon. I checked the timing belt and it was set alright, but i replaced it anyway. I am now sure that the timing belt is installed correctly. Camshaft and Crankshaft marks align perfectly before and after installing the tensioner. Still, the only way that it would run ok was set it at roughly 30 degrees btdc. If the distributor is off a tooth, could it cause this problem? The air gap is within specifications and the coil specificaitons are also alright. Does anybody have a diagram of where the distributor should be placed when motor is at TDC or any other suggestions? My Haynes manual isn't very clear.

had the same issue a long while ago and it was a burnt valve so they set it at 25btc, when i set it correct it was running like shiat. not to say thats the issue but it does seem odd to be set way past the 10 mark

thanks for the distributor manuals. It is correctly installed. Could it be the EGR valve thats bad and the timing advance is compensating? Any ideas?

Do you have any codes? If not I would more suspect the tps...had a similar issue a few weeks ago, and the tps was the prob, check it out, and see if it needs to be adjusted. Otherwise...maybe a bad o2, or vaf meter. heres the link to the tps specs.....

No, I have no error codes. Thanks for the info. I'll check it out. But what is the vaf meter? VAF is an acronym for what?

Thanks Team 420. The tps was set off 180 degrees. I set it right and all is well with the timing. Somebody who had the knowledge to originally remove it and later compensate with the timing should have known that something was off. Oh well. Thank you. I hope this thread is useful to someone else.

 

Glad that fixed your problem!! I only guessed that because the same thing happened to mine recently.
