Timing belt destruction

I was going a major clean sesh today and I found my old timing belt.

About ohh 11 months ago my sister borrowed my truck, when she got home she proceded to tell me the truck was bogging down like CRAZY and hardly had any power.
So I go out to try and start the truck.. nothing.. just turns and turns and turns.

3 friends later still no idea what the hell is going on.
we did a full tune up, replaced ignition module etc.etc.
So the truck sat for 6 months, finally got a guy who found out it was the timing belt.
So after getting raped by him to the tune of 500 dollers and having my fan shroud cut and zapstrapped together and a improperly timed truck it finally ran again.

so when I saw the old belt I had to laugh.. here is what we saw.
Keep in mind we have good reason to belive this belt had over 180,000kms on it.

We all found it amazing the truck ran after the belt skipped ( a lot of teeth missing all over the belt ) and ran right untill it got home.
Thank god for non interface engines!!

You gotta be kiddin' me! I know you ain't really.

I guess I shouldn't be so suprised. I'm changing the idler pulley on mine right now(waiting till tomorrow for the part). Some nimrod installed the thing without releasing the pulley by backing off the bolt a tad, so the tensioner spring could serve it's purpose. That being to pull at constant rate on the idler pulley keeping the belt at the correct tension. So it's been running way too loose, good thing I caught it now. The belt is in fair enough shape to re-use in my case.

regular work would have prevented this but hey, at least the truck made it home before it died

Yeah, I'd say so. Should be replaced every 60k miles, it was therefor 120k miles too late.

yep. New one was put on at 190kms so lets say new one at 280kms
thats if I keep the 3.0

I just did a timing belt on a buddies Prizm....exact same thing. Then the crank pulley was frozen on.

btw, you are not supposed to loosen up that bolt. Its supposed to be tight. The spring is there to set pre-tension, then needs to be tightened down. So you might want to go have a talk with the Toyota Engineer who followed his instructions when assembling the engine lol.

O.k. , I have never done one so that was my initial interpretion of what I read. Duly noted.

I couldn't tell ya whether a Toyo tech is responsible or not(maybe you know something I don't). I personally would have replaced the idler bearing(pulley) at the time, it was nearly seized(what an awful sound that was, frightening). The water inlet needs replaced too. Which this nimrod (me) oughta do if he no wants to do this again soon.

i meant when the engine was built at the factory lol. The bottom bearing is easy enough to replace, that its prolly a good idea to do it whenever you do a belt. The top one is a pain in the butt.

Wait...I think I deserve partial credit on that one teach. I just didn't get to the part that says "Retighten the idler pulley bolt to 27 ft. lbs."
