-timing- on an 88 22RE

Hey guys i just rebuilt my 1988 Toyota Pickup SR5 22RE anyways im down to timing.I timed it with a strobe but im used to a vacuum advanced (GMC K15) but were working with a electronic advance,anyways ive heard that you need to short out two plugs in the diagnostics switch on the passages side iner wheel well . I haven't done anything with that yet i wanted to get some feed back from someone who has done it before. I'm very excited to get it on the road and need to take care for this first any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, there is a plug on the side of the fender well, t1 and e1 i think? te1 and e1? if you search it up 4crawlers page shows you. But yes, jump the plug and you should hear/see the idle drop down a bit then you can proceed to set your timing.

Short circuit the terminals of the timing check connector T-E1 and check and adjust the timing, then unshort the connector-22R-E and 22R-TE engines.

1. Connect a timing light to the engine following the manufacturer"s instructions.

5 Degrees

Before top dead center base timing specification





2. Start the engine and run it at idle.

3. Remove the rubber cap from the check connector and short the connector at terminals (T-E), as shown.

4. Loosen the distributor pinch bolt just enough that the distributor can be turned. Aim the timing light at the marks on the crankshaft pulley and slowly turn the distributor until the timing mark is at the desired readings as listed in the "Tune-Up Specifications'' chart. Tighten the distributor pinch bolt.

5. Unshort the connector.

There should be an emissions label underneath your hood. That will give the most accurate information for your particular motor.

In case the label isn't there, or you're not running the stock motor, here's what mine says: Make all adjustments with engine at normal operating temperature, air cleaner installed, all accessories turned off and transmission in neutral

Tune-up Specs:
Idle speed: 750 RPM
Ignition Timing: 5 degrees BTDC with check connector short-circuited at idling
(shows connector layout, and points to pins E1 and Te1

This is from my 1990 22RE; DLX Extra-cab; 5 speed manual transmission

Looks like a lot of other people replied before I could finalize this post. Stupid Photobucket (actually stupid Java that doesn't work right on my computer). It sounds like they covered everything very thoroughly. If I can get the pictures uploaded, I will post them in another reply.

My service manual mentions to make sure engine is at operating temperature, and also check idle speed. Adjust the idle speed to recommended RPM if necessary, then continue with adjusting the ignition timing.

Also, it helps if you mark the index marks (on both the index plate and the pulley) with white chalk or white-out. It will greatly help you see the correct marks. Just make sure you get the correct index mark on the plate.

And always check your idle speed while adjusting your timing.
It may take several tries to get it right: idle at 750, set timing, idle at 850... adjust idle to 750, set timing, idle at 700... set idle to 750, set timing, idle at 725...
