throwout bearing replacement
on an 86 22re 5spd 4runner how do you replace the throwout bearing into the carrier i.e. how do you get the old one out and the new one in? A diagram would be great or pics if anyone has them...

The way I got mine out was using a grease gun to pack-it full of grease...that is; pump the grease through the hole so that it fills in the cavity behind the bearing. Then use a correct OD diameter wood dowl that matches the ID of the bearing. Tap the dowl into the hole and it should displace the bearing, thus popping it out. You might have to top off the cavity with grease one or two times before it comes fully out.



I new I took pics of this process for a reason...
I used a ball peen hammer and wacked it maybe 10 times before it popped. With the wood dowel, your not going to damage anything.

the unit is out....
when you buy a clutch kit it comes with a bearing only, that bearing somehow fits inside the carrier/housing. How do you replace the bearing in that housing.

Looking at my old throwout bearing assembly, it doesn't look like you can swap out just the bearing. I would go back to the parts store and have them give you an assembly with the new bearing already in it. That's the way it should be in the first place.

Marlin clutches come with only the bearing. I took mine to the shop. They charged $5 to press the old one off and the new one on. I thought it best to have it done using the right tools, which I don't have, instead of risking screwing up the bearing.

when i bought my clutch same deal, just the bearing and not the whole unit...not that big of a deal just bring it to any competent shop and they will do it for 10 15 bucks like brass said...i brought mine to a firestone shop...lol it was the closest one...i think i had a thread on it..if you feel like searching my name i bealive i had pics of it too....

I am going through this now. What I am finding as the that the 3.0 V6 clutch throwout bearing is different than the 22R/22RE clutch throwout bearing. Problem is my 1988 4runner SR5 with 22RE and 5 speed trans has what I am pretty sure is a 3.0 V6 throwout bearing. Now my problem is finding the parts to press into this new bearing.

hahhaha i took a look at this thread and was like hahah thats the pilot bearing! i dont know why imposting this sorry. hahah but yeah thats def a pilot bearing up there great pictures though. getting the pilot was such a PITA for my 3VZE. holy ˟˟˟˟.

When I rebuilt the engine in my 4runner just recently I had this problem too. I remember looking at the assembly in one hand and the bearing in the other thinking how is this supposed to work? I took the assembly apart and it looked like the bearings were different so I didn't try to swap them, I just put the old one back in because it wasn't it too bad of shape...

It's actually a different piece all together. Oreily auto parts had both parts. One is for 86-88 and the other is for 89-? I had the parts guy pull both parts and one of them looked exactly like mine.
