Hello all. I thought I knew what I was talking about but the more I research, the more confused I am. I always thought that if the transmission made noise with the clutch pedal depressed (clutch engaged), and the noise stopped when you pushed it in (disengaging it) it was a throwout bearing.

But I've been searching and I keep finding the opposite and people saying it's throw out. Whining noise with the clutch pushed in....

Basically my truck has a loud whine only when the clutch is out (engaged) and has a load on it (i.e. accelerating) So is that throw out or not?

Also I can't get it to go into 4th but I've got another thread for that...

I would say its the throw out bearing. Mine does the same thing. Makes noise when pedal is out and not when pedal is in. Reason is there is slop in the bearing so when the clutch is pedal out it is free wheeling on the input shaft. Therefore making noise.

It's not the throwout bearing. I'd almost guarantee it's the pilot bearing.

In any case the transmission needs to come out sooner or later

I go towards the clutch release bearing.

If it pops out of gear time for a bearing kit!!

I have the same noise, in neutral, clutch pedal out, but mine is more of a shhhhhh sound, i did a transmission swap, brand new release bearing from marlin as well as slave cyl., clutch fork and clips etc. however, i did not change my clutch or pilot bearing, i am almost positive it is my pilot. with an up coming motor swap i just ignore it.

Perhaps I should just bite the bullet and do both?

Bushing kit already ordered in hopes of allowing the truck to go in 4th gear. Getting tired of shifting from 3rd to 5th.

Gennerally ...
A bad clutch does not make noise it just slips.
A failing throw out bearinging makes noise when the pedal is pushed (has a load on it).
If the throw out is really bad it may make noise all of the time.
That leaves the pilot bearing. Replace all three if they have a lot of miles on them. While you are there check the rear main in the motor and the front seal of the transmission.

Also change the flywheel when doing a clutch.

i think a new flywheel is what like 60 or 70 bucks,...if that is too steep you can get a resurface for half that....if it has the step in it, ...ask for them to keep it that way, at least that is what i have been told to do.

Yes, for half the price you can get it resurfaced which is the only way that I have ever had to do it, but for another $35 bucks it may be worth buying a new one.
