Question thoughts on pulling 3.0L out

I'll be pulling the 3.0 out to rebuild it (rod knock). Any thoughts on how I could make the job easier? My friend who has done many headgasket recalls (former Toyota tech) says we should pull the heads first, then the block.

Does everyone do it like this? Is it just because the top bellhousing bolts are a pain? I'll be installing a 2" body lift, should I do that first (to make engine removal easier), or do it when the engine is out? I forgot if he leaves the harness in the truck or pulls it with the engine.

Yes I know, "swap in a 3.4". I'm short on time so that will have to wait.

I pulled the whole thing, tranny and transfer case and all. I wouldn't recommend it. Not at all. I did it because the top two bolts on the bellhousing were giving me all sorts of trouble. You can pull the whole thing pretty easily without pulling the heads. Your call.

Yeah a body lift will make removing the tranny bolts easier.

Leave trans in initially and pull engine. Two dowels that align engine with transmission, near the top, will give you he!!. With engine just off mounts, I shook engine until a gap appeared. From there it was screwdrivers and hammer until it released. Removing heads in the compartment is a bich.

I'll probably start this tommorow or Wednesday. He needs to move a truck that's in the way so I could put my truck in the garage.

Pics? No, yes?
It will just be a straight out and in. Although I will post pics on what the rod knock is about.

Also had an idea. With the engine out, should I put new contacts in the starter? Is it just the 22RE's that have the starting issue?

Do you wheel hard? If so I might recommend just going to the 3.4. BUT if Money is an issue the 3.0 can be rebuilt. (Though it is a gutless engine)

Buh Bye 3.0...

I just pulled the engine. Left the Tranny in place.

Elvota has an AWESOME write up (with pics and everything) under the 3.4 swap section....

And here is my swap... going kinda slow though.

I know this isn't entirely what you asked for, since you want to re-do the headers, but it might help as far as the pulling part. Oh and if you use a cherry picker to pull the 3.0 Have the front end sticking out of the garage because otherwise you'll run into not being able to get the cherry picker high enough to clear the engine before it hits your garage....

Well for now it will become my DD. My current one has a hole in the frame ('89 pickup). What's down the road? If the 3.0 wants to act up again I may just have to do the swap.

I was thinking about pulling it with the heads on. It will probably go in that way. The heads are easier to torque down when the engine is out of the truck.
