thermostat test from an 87 4runner

i pulled my thermostat out of my 87 4runner w/ 22re and a 5 spd. i boiled some water and put the thermo in but i didnt see anything happen. i can push the thermo open but it doesnt appear as though boiling water does anything. i assume its bad?

If its not opening when you put it in boiling water, then it bad.
