Short of removing the skid plate (or taking it to Jiffy lube), ain't no way to avoid a mess. Been there, done that....

What? 22R's are the easiest oil changes to do without making a complete mess. I really don't make that much of mess when I did mine. When your done, spray down the area with brake clean. It will remove the oil and evaporate. I would recommend putting a piece of cardboard down to catch all the drip. Actually every oil change I always put a piece of cardboard down. Now the 3.0 that is a mess!!

yeah the drain hole makes a little mess, but you just wipe it up with paper towels. Also wipe the side of the block with a paper towel before putting the new filter in place.

the 22re is the easiest oil change i've ever done. filter doesent even require a filter wrench.

as long as you position whatever is going to catch the oil correctly, you wont make a mess...sure, the oil hits the skidplate on the way out, but it still falls down in one steady stream for the most part....i can do it mess-free with a regular 5 gallon bucket. and just drain the oil before you take off the filter...that should mean much less mess when you take it off

Alex, you need to change the oil on a Datsun 280z, that's the easiest I know, especially the filter.

i havent done it on a 22re or a 3vze but on my 3.4 i have the same problem with making a mess. draining it is fine, no mess, but once i remove the filter, oil trickles down everywhere and its hard to get one pan under all the drips. not to mention it likes to collect on top of the skid plate. i guess i could take off the skid but i havent quite needed to do that yet.

Try doing it on the 1GR-FE. The oil filter is placed right on the top of the engine. It can be done with no mess whatsoever and doesn't take a filter wrench. Lovin' it.

Here is an idea. Get a piece of tin and use it to deflect the oil. Any place that does siding would have pieces of aluminum or even scrap yards.

I use a piece of aluminum foil, folded and molded to a shape convenient to channel the oil from pan to bucket. None even gets on the truck. For the filter, I use a one gallon ziplock bag. Loosen the filter so it is removable by hand and put the bag over the filter. Unscrew the filter with the bag over it and most of the oil goes into the bag instead of all over the engine. Once the filter is undone, just let it drop into the baggie. Like someone else said, brake cleaner works well for little messes.
