This is an odd question, but is there a short term reason for over tightening ILS bearing?

The previous owner may have over tightened it, maybe because he's an idiot and didn't follow proper procedure.

But I'm also wondering if you were wheelin' and had some damage that cranking down on that 54 mm nut would be of temporary help. If so, what sort of damage would that be?
