temp guage suddenly went to hot

So in the last month i put the new head on after running it out of coolant due to a coolant hose coming off. Since then this has happened twice...i will be driving along and glance down at my temp gauge, it will be about 3/4 of the way up (usually is barely below half) so i shut it off immediately, open the hood and look for any coolant leaks or signs of overheating, i saw none and it was full of coolant. So i get in and start it up, temp reads normal now, so i drive off expecting the temp to rise if there is actually a problem. It never rises and stays at it usual temp.

I am suspecting the temp gauge is just wrong, because i have no reason to believe it has any cooling issues besides the gauge. Does this sound possible? I know these gauges aren't too accurate to begin with. Both times it has been about 50 degrees in the morning and just cruising at less than 2k rpms about 40mph. Its a 22re btw. See sig for more vehicle details.

Sensors work on resistance, if its grounded it will read hot. Make sure its not grounding out anywhere.

It sounds like thats what it is because both times it happened, the heat on about 5 minutes into the drive in the morning. About the time I would guess the thermostat would open. Except.... I'm 99% sure the last thermostat I put in was the dual stage one. It was a Napa one but I'm almost sure its the one the article talked about.

Well it happened again this morning. It was about 30 degrees which is the coldest I've ever drivin this in yet. So I had the heat blasting of course and the temp started the rise. I shut the heat off and within 10 seconds the temp dropped suddenly to its usual temp (thermostat opened) so I think I may drill a couple holes in this thermostat even though it is the dual stage one already.

I've only noticed it for a couple seconds at a time.

Might be a bad ground or bad temp switch, or bad gauge

Just started a thread about the exact same issue. Both times it was coolish and the heat was on to take the chill out. The needle hits full hot and shifts back to the normal range immediately.
