You will have to swap the engine harness, sensors and injectors from the 86 and put them on the 92. 86 had low impedence injectors, with a resistor pack wired in. Midway through 88 toyota went to high impedence injectors without a resistor pack, that is what your 92 has. The 92 sensors may have different operating perameters then the 86 ones and might not be compatible with the 86 ECU. I guess that you could go on a website such as Toyodiy.com and check out and compare part #'s but it's probably less of a hassle to just switch the sensors.
You will also have to remove the flex plate, spacers and backing plate on the block off of the 92 and install the backing plate off of the 86 and the flywheel and clutch. You will also have to install a pilot bearing in the back of the crank of the 92 for the transmission input shaft to mate with.

Another swap question. Just scored a V6 '88 4runner with 283k miles. I figure I'll just replace the engine before it fails. Can I replace it with a rebuilt 22re (not myself)? If so what else needs to be modified?

Just swap the complete intake manifold and exhaust manifold from the 86 engine on to the 92 engine, also the knock sensor and oil gauge sending unit. After that it should be plug and play.

apelham1000; You should probably do a search on the v6 to 22re swap on this forum. As I recall one of the obstacles that you will encounter is that the v6 chassis has the motor mounts in a different location than the 22re chassis. Which means it is not a drop in swap it will require fabrication.
