I'll definitely have some pics for everyone, and I'm hoping it helps in the gas mileage arena, because it's been sucking since I put the bigger tires on here. I also know it's way underpowered, so I'm hoping when I get the S/C installed it will help again.

Using a bolt sounds like a good idea, I think I'll try that.

Another question I have...will I have to get a shorter belt? It seems like there will be a lot of slack in the existing fan belt that adjustments won't be able to take out.

A new belt for the water pump? Nope. The old belt will work just fine.

Hey Steve.. Just to also clarify.. You remove the fan, not the pully too.. Gonna need that.

As for finding out if it is a 3.0 or a 3.8, Pretty dang easy.. the 3.0 say's "3.0" on top.. the 3.8 say's "3.8" on top.. I am pretty sure only the 3.8 had the 2-speed fan but I am not sure..

I had one saved before I left the body shop I ran.. I forgot to take it with me :pat:

I may be doing mine tomorrow on my 3.4L. I'm just overwhelmed by what it might take on my engine versus the 3.0L. Seafariman, can you once again detail (with any recent updates you might have experienced) what I need to buy and where I need to buy it? I need the detailed list. I want a fixed turn on point, and it to run when the A/C is on. Since the 3.4L shroud is so much bigger I'm going to have to do some cutting and pop riviting I guess.

Any recent help would be greatly appreciated.

My 3.0 already had an electric fan that comes on when I hit the AC button, so I didn't wire mine for the AC.

If you're going to wire up the high speed function, then you'll need a seperate relay and figure out the wiring for it. I have yet to set mine up, but I have all the parts. I'm going to use (2) 40amp relays to make the connection. I "think" that is enough for the fan, at least that's what some people said on pirate.

Chris, I have no further changes to report. Ever since swapping to the fixed 185* thermo fan controller, I have had no problems with heat at all. I even was out wheeling in 90* heat with the A/C cranked all the way up and idled my truck for like 30 minutes and the temp needle didn't even move past normal. I am pleased with the results and have no complaints. And I haven't even wired up the high speed setting! The updated writeup at the beginning of this thread is still valid. Good luck.

how did you wire the fan for the A/C? i got the flex-a-lite for my 3.0L and really haven't looked into my engine bay to see where to tap it. i'm assuming you would tap it in the same place for the Taurus fan mod.

Tap the green wire that is attached to the A/C compressor clutch.

Some other various pics I took of my taurus fan install.


Taurus fan cut down to fit the toyota radiator
To fit the fan you need to take 1/2" or so off the front of the fan shroud then take 3" off the right side of the shroud.
I used a small drill bit and drilled holes for the zip ties to go through to secure the fan to the radiator.


Fan all mounted up. I now have good clearence between the pulley and the fan motor cover.


This next blurry pic is the hayden manual fan temp controller. I just stuck the temp probe right in the radiator I did get to test it today and it works great when it reaches 185 deg temp it comes on and then shuts off when the temp drops.



The rats nest of wires to the 40 amp relay I still need to clean up.

Sorry in advance because im sure this has been answered but i'm studying for exams and cant read the whole 3 page thread...what exactly will this mod help out and about how long has it taken you to do it? I have access to a friends junkyard and might be lookingto do it if there are some nice gains and it isnt all that complicated. Thanks and sorry again for any repetitition.

180* temp sensor = a good thing!!!!!


This will probably help performance, I see no reason for it to hurt it! Cooler temps = longer engine life AND more performance!

Someone on another board made a interesting point on wiring up the fan. Why not wire it up with the temp probe low on the radiator so when the probe gets wet it will shut the fan off automatically eliminating the need for a manual shutoff switch. Then wire the switch so you have manual control as well over the fan. Does it make any sense? I know some people who go barrelling through water but most I know go slow through it so it would work for them. You could always put a second switch in to have full manual control over the fan so you could cut it off completely.

This is how mine is wired currently.



So far the wiring is holding up fine I am just using 10 gauge wiring to the 40 amp relay and fan. I do plan on adding a fuse or fuseable link between the battery and relay the fan has a built in fuse block since it was a 95 and had the recall done ford did to it.

Thanks for the great info on the fan install seafarinman you inpired me to finally get off my butt and install my fan too.

The only problem I see with this is that the hot water fresh from the engine is piped in at the top of the radiator. Ideally, you would want the sensor to know how hot the engine is, not how hot the water is after it's been cooled by the radiator.

It's still possible to set the fan controller to come on when the engine hits 180 (or so), but it's just one more variable to throw into the system. You would also need to get a variable temp controller and need to make sure your radiator is working properly.
