There should be no reason to change it, unless you change out your thermostat I suppose. Besides the fixed sensor is at least $10.00 cheaper, and simpler to install and use (see Murphy's Law)

Tempting. I might have to do this even though my mechanical abilities are at bearly seeing above ground.
I don't have any problems with my temp when running. Unless I stop at a light for a long lenght of time, then it starts climbing, but once I get going, it goes down again. However, I do have problems everytime I start my engine after a drive. That temp needle climbs up to three-quarters!!

You guys can do it. It is really not that bad. Once you have all of the parts in front of you, it can be a bit overwhelming, but once it starts to come together, you'll see it is not really bad at all. For the 3rd Gen 4Runners/4th Gen pickups, the fan is a bit narrow for the 3.4L radiator. You will have a couple of inches all around the radiator. No problem though, it will still work. Besides as these radiators are thinner, there will be more clearance between the fan and the water pump pulley. Good luck!

I went to junkyard today, but I could determine two things:
1) Whether the engine was a 3.8 liter V6 or not
2) How the two wires coming out of the fan consists of a high and low speed wiring configuration.
Anyone know if there should be more than two wires coming out of the motor, which owuld make sense to me.

Dude, you need to look at the engines. The 2 speed has the following wires on the connector:
Black~ground
Brown/orange~low speed +12V
Blue~high speed +12V
Make sure to get the whole harness including the 2 circuit breakers.

If everything goes as planned, I'm picking mine up tomorrow morning. From my understanding it's just the 3.8 liter, because I found one today that wasn't the 3.8 liter V6, and it didn't have the high and low wires.

The brand/part number for the "fan controller" is:
-Hayden part # 3647 (adjustable 160*-210*~I have cooked 2 of these- I don't recommend these!!) This is the one with the relay and potentiometer potted into the harness block. Around $40-$45
-Hayden part # 3652 (Preset model~various preset temp settings) This has the relay and temp sensor that are designed separately. Around $20-$30
-Hayden part # 3653 (old style adjustable temp sensor~has a separate mounted sensor and variable resistor) Around $29-$35

A question:
Instead of grinding down the water pump studs and putting nuts/washers on, why don't you use vise-grips, and remove the studs from the water pump, and replace them with short bolts that screw in?
I like this mod, and plan on doing it, but I'm about 5 mods behind on my list of things to do, so I'm putting it off for awhile...

I've got the fan, and I'm looking to do this mod pretty soon, but I've also got to put the S/C on, fuel injectors, spark plugs, wires, fuel pump, bumpers, etc, so we'll see what happens.
I like the ides of taking the studs out and replacing them with bolts that screw in. Is this possible?

I don't see why not. Whenever I've replaced Toyota water pumps, I've had to remove the studs from the old one to install on the new one. You'll probably just have to go to Lowes or NAPA and find what the thread pitch is, and find some bolts. I'm guessing about a half inch would work with room for the lock washer, flat washer, and the pulley.
