Smile Tailgate Cupholders?

Wanting to do this as my next mod. I'm always sitting on my 4Runner's tailgate when hanging out with my buddys, and have always thought there should be some cupholders.

I was thinking of one on each side, I've searched here, and a couple tailgating specific sites and could only find this: http://www.chevyavalancheclub.com/fp...s/tailgate.png

My question is, does anyone have any ideas what to use for the holders themselves? something shallow that has a lip?

The cupholders used in that pic are way to deep for I want, just an inch would work, even a 1/2 inch would be fine. Was thinking of going to Home Depot and checking out some plumbing, only problem is I doubt any will have a lip on them, without one I think it will look pretty sloppy.

Any ideas would be great! Thanks

Your buddies must drink a LOT slower than mine. Nothing lasts long enough to need a cup holder.

Buy some coozees and call it good. Anything else is gonna look bootyfabulous.

Maybe you could get some metal, make big cup holder like indents in them, cut out square pieces out of your tailgate and weld it in. I don't own a 4runner so I don't know if the tailgate is carpeted or not, but if it is you can just cover up the welds with carpet and cut holes in it for the cupholders. Just my two cents lol

or, you could build a fridge into a tool box. i went to the beach for a week, and kept the cooler in my tool box. kept it cold for days. as far as cup holders, i like that idea of welding in the plate with a shallow "dent"

Thanks for the replies guys.

I like the idea of making one out of metal and welding it in. There is carpet on the tailgate, I'm not sure of it can be peeled back or not, might be glued in. I have never worked with metal but a few of my buddies do so they may be able to help me.

I wanted to do it because I thought it would be simple, cheap, and cool to do but it's not looking like it. I looked on JCWhitney and all they didn't have anything, just some Heep cupholder covers things that wouldn't work (they were $45 a piece anyway.

if you really wanted to do a "weld in cup holder" you could fab up a round cup holder style circle with say a 2" lip. Remove the carpeted cover panel and you will find another sheet metal type cover underneath. You could weld you cup holders to this sheet metal then bolt back in place. Make a new Carpeted cover out of 3/8" ply wood, carpet it, then bolt in place. if you did the measuring right you could make it flush......

If it were me, i would just set the drink on the tailgate anyways, no holder needed (or are you driving with your tailgate down)
