A/T Question?

I have an question regarding my automatic transmission in my 1987 Runner. the question is on some days the transmission shifts nicely into gear with good pick up and on other days it shifts harder and feels like it goes from 1st gear to 3gear and slowly picks up speed...but the thing is it is on and off...anyone have a solution other than pulling that transmission and getting a new one.....anyone had a similar problem?

Sounds like maybe a soleniod is sticking. That can be fixed without removing the tranny.

This is a thread for a A340F but the earlier trannies should be very similar:

Just ignore the codes since you don't OBDII.

Here's some more:

You don't have to remove the valve body to replace the solenoids.

Unplugg the tranny computer and see if is the same. With the computer unplugged, do a manual shift. L will be 1st, 2 will be 3rd and D will be OD. You will not have 2nd gear because the 1-2 shift solenoids will not function.

Its actually the engine computer too, I think what he means is to unplug the tranny from the ECU.

Yeah..I can get moosehead, I believe it is illegal to ship beer though, I tried to do that when I was in colorado(they have some real good beer) and was told if i tried, I would be fined heavily and possibly get jail time....dunno if thats %100 true or not. Might just be a co law... I will look into it though!!

There's a separate computer for the tranny. It's under the radio, at the front of the console. You need to unbolt it because the plug is hard to pull out.
