90's style 4 runner tranny/ t-case 5 spd. I drained the fluid of the t-case and out came ATF wich is what new chain driven t-cases have. But parts stores everywhere tell me to put gear oil in. any help?

 

Put in whatever is recommended from the factory for the tranny/t-case unit you have. You'll need to identify that. Run a google search on toyota axle codes. The pages will explain how to make the ID. Then, search the FSM under transmissions for what goes in it.

calls for gear oil. some reason i think its wrong.

 

if its a 4cyl it has a gear driven case , which would make gear oil more sensible.

And, if it calls for gear oil, why would you think it's wrong? You can always call a dealership serv. dept.

 

bryan - it's chain driven out of a 90sumthin 4runner. I can see the chain through the fill hole. i put gear oil in and it hasn't made weird noises yet i think i am ok.

 

Why don't you read the manual or get a haynes manual?

haynes will tell you right in the beginning what oil and how much.

Odds are it take the same gear oil as the transmission and diffs, although for my 96 T100 Haynes manual specified 75W-90 for the front, trans, and transfer, and either 90W or 80W-90(cold weather) for the rear axle.

I just bought 2 gallons of 80W-90 and put it in everything.

 

yeah it says gear oil. i was just going off of other chain driven cases. It does seem manufactures use the same for both though.

 

the automatic tranny tcases use ATF (it's actually shared with the tranny). EVERYTHING else uses gear oil.
