Swing away tire carrier

What would it take to mount a swing away tire carrier off a 4Runner onto a 4Runner that didn't come standard with one?

I've seen guys that posted pics of doing this. But have not seen anyone post up long term results. You most also get the internal supports/reinforcement brackets. I really considered this but have held off because I'm concerned about potential damage with time from mounting a larger/heavier than stock tire on and mount on a vehicle not designed for it.

Hopefully some one will post up long term results.

What mudd said ^^
If I ever get my 4Runner together I'll probably fab a rear plate bumper with a tire carrier built onto it.

I've seen some builds where they didn't have the internal brace, but they definitely added in a home-fabbed support. I wouldn't use the stock carrier with aftermarket sized tires, it's not really meant for that kind of increased load. My assumption too is that most who do this type of mod end up ditching it later on as their rig progressed to a more hardcore SFA rig and tires no longer fit on it.

Yah I've also seen or heard of guys on here using Isuzu trooper tire carriers on 4runners or trucks. I figured there had to be some sort of internal bracing for it tho. I don't have a rear bumper yet either, but I think I found a really nice and simple design with the carrier built onto the bumper on addicted offroad

Why would you have to rewire the license plate light in the truck when the plate goes down by the bumper as opposed to being in the middle of the tailgate like a 4Runner?

Bcuz the tire I have on the carrier is 31x10.50 and it covers the plate, I don't have a rear bumper where my light would go. I had it attached to the actual bed.
