Sway Bar bolts busted into frame....
#1
Hey Guys, First post here! I have used information from this forum group so many times on both my toyota pickups that i figured it was about friggin time i joined. Here is my problem.... 93 Toyo SR5 with the 3.0L..... pulled trans to replace blown clutch.... (cuzins wedding last weekend..open bar.... too many squeeling tires...you get the idea) anyways, I broke off all 4 bolts holding the sway bar to the frame.... i dont have acess to acetylene.... what would the best method be to remove them and replace... I was thinking of just drilling them out and retapping... although ive never done it before seems simple enough....just alot of drilling
.. believe it or not the trans removal and clutch replacement has been a breeze... i did the rear main seal while i was in there....and had to drop the stupid oil pan to pull the seal housing out... that was a real bitch.
Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated...

There's a product called eazy-outs (I think). Drill into snapped off bolts and then will back them out. Or dremmel a slot in the shaft and back them out with a slotted screwdriver. Depends on how siezed up they are. Hit em with some pb blaster first.

sway bar? leave it off. i've had mine off for almost 2 years now and i've never said, "gee, the situation that i'm in could be improved if only i had my sway bar."
you won't miss it. in fact, you (like myself) may find it to be a smoother ride

x2 on leaving it off for a pickup since the leafs sorta stabilize the whole rig (unless your leafs and shocks are totally shot). 4runner might be questionable since they have higher COG and coils in back. I've had mine off for 3-4yrs now, the on-road ride is far superior without it, and offroad even more-so.
as to getting the old ones out: Easy-outs like mentioned (I like the spiral-type vs the square ones), reverse drill bits, weld another bolt to it, etc. Lastly, you can drill everything out and either re-tap the hole to larger size or do a helicoil/timesert in the size you need.

Thanks guys! Looks like ill be trying those easy outs....goona use a reg propane torch and some pb...allready sprayed once. The sway bar is connected at the front...connected to the control arm linkages and frame....I might be getting my terms wrong sorry for confusion guys!

:wabbit2: I have these break all the time.
I just make a new plate with M8x1.25 threads grind the broken bolts down flat and smooth weld the new plates on.
I replace all the bushings and other hardware at that time..
I noticed a Big difference when I took it for a parts run with out the sway bar in.
i know lots leave them out.:jessica:
