Swap to solid axle or just keep ifs?

This is more of an opinion thing. I am buying an 88 that needs head work for $300 but I had a guy offer to sell my and older 4runner with solid axle for $100 just wondering if you guys would make it a big project or if you think I may as we'll keep ifs. Keep in mind the most extreme I get is hitting some mud holes and that sort of deal not really after the rock climber life. Thanks! And I'm decent so I won't have to take it anywhere for that.

Up to you what wrong with the runner whats wrong with the pickup. $300 & $100. Sound more than too good to be true. Solid axel runners and gen 2 pickups are rare so taking a good one apart is not always a popular idea. If its hammered then maybe. But as far as SASing your pu. It's a fair amount of work for benefits that you won't really use by your own description. If it were me and the runner was t hammered beyond repair I would put time into getting it back close to good condition. But that's because they are rare and I love the SFA's . I am thinking about doing a SAS on m 93 pu. By if I found a non hammered runner or 84-85 pu I would probably use my 93 as a parts truck to get the SFA rig up to par. Just my opinion. I am sure there are several people on here that would love to get their wrenches on the runner for a rehab project.

IFS will do what you want it to do from what you are describing. Are there other reasons you might want solid axle? Solid axles seem to be easier to lift. A SAS kit is pricey from what I have read, since you are a welder, you might like the challenge. Really depends on the reasons you are thinking of.

It's basically that I'm buying the $300 truck for a tranny to put in my 86 4runner and the solid axle 4runner just because it's a stupid good deal. And so we can have a little fun with the pickup due to the fact that we have a 350 on hand that's ready to drop in. And it seems like a fun challenge!!

You mean a guys is offering to sell you an older 4Runner with SA?

If frame is good, heck by all means take it. SFA if you can get one for good price is good. Worst case, it can be a project you can take your time doing.

I'll try to clarify it all. I currently own an 86 4runner I am going to buy a 4runner with SA for $100 that does not have engine or rear end. I am also buying an 88 pickup that has blown head good tranny for $300. The root of all this needing to happen is tranny in my 86 but the plan now is to put tranny from PU into my 86 and take the tranny from SA runner into the PU and sell the solid axle. Any buyers in NE Kansas?

I grew up back there... there is probably massive body rot and cancer, so parting 'em out is a good idea, or even keeping 'em for spare parts.

it's not like out west, where you have a solid platform that's worth saving.

I went and looked at the front end and it needed more work ha not was worth so I told them to keep it. I'm just going to buy the 88 pickup and run it ifs. It does need a new head and I have heard that on those 22re's it is easier to swap motors than to replace the head. Any opinions?

The head is easy to replace. If you can get away with just getting it resurfaced then do it. But if you need to send any more than shot $150. Just buy a new head from engnbldr free shipping $450 ish should get in delivered to your door ready to bolt on. If you do a motor swap. Make sure you know the condition of the new motor. If your unsure of the motor you might get lucky or just have to redo it in a few 1000k miles. Sometimes it's best to just fix it right the first time and not have to redo it again and again. Hope this helps

Thanks, I've found a few completely assembled heads for around 300 on ebay anyone got somewhere that they'd recomend getting one from? I do believe in the fact of spending and extra buck to do it right instead of scooting by cheating myself

I would avoid eBay unless you can't find it else ware. Engnbldr for 450 I believe includes a cam as well. Also his customer service can't be beat. Strongly recommend you check him out. A lot of eBay stuff is cheap knockoff while some is good. Engnbldr is all grade A.
