Stupid question about oil filters

I just hit 500 miles on my rebuild and when I changed the oil and filter no oil came out of the filter. My old motor would pour oil down the side of the block when you pulled the filter off. Oh yeah it's a 22re.

What brand of filter was on it, if it didn't have a anti-drain valve the oil could have just drained back into the sump.

Fram ph3614 I don't think the yota filters leak down the side but I was worried with the new motor and all. If this is normal I'm glad no more messy oil changes.

I second that. Use factory oil filters. They cost almost the same.

it dont matter what oil filter you use it will drain back if it sits long enough before you take it off. but, i agree w/ elton, do not use fram or bosch. i have seen frams take out an engine from the paper eliment coming apart and clogging oil passages.

I normally use Wix but they were out and I didn't think it would hurt for a 500 mile oil change. I now have some yota filters and that's what's on there now.

I've got yota filters now. So what I'm reading is the filters aren't supposed to leak oil down the side of the block so I'm cool.

That isn't necessarily what you're reading into it (or shouldn't be at least). Filters with a good anti-drainback valve (OEM, Wix, Motorcraft) will retain oil in the filter longer than those with poor ones (Fram, Bosch). Ideally, the oil would stay in the filter forever and then leak out all over your block when changed. This is not an ideal world though so view it as good when the oil leaks and bad when it comes off dry (unless the engine has been sitting for a couple days or more).
