There was a thread started a few weeks ago, started by Tofer. I don't remember the thread name, but he was having trouble with his A340H auto tranny. Search for all threads by Tofer and you'll find it. I don't remember if resolved his issues, but I seem to remember they sounded very similar to yours....

But 1st things 1st......check your fluid level 2mro. Remember to get an accurate reading Let the engine warm up, and check the level of fluid while the truck is running

my buddy and myself have had this problem with only being to move in 4lo with the neutral like rev in 2hi and its an easy fix.. while driving forward in 4lo, shift to 4hi and then 2hi one at a time. for some reason or another both our 4runners came out of 4lo and went back to working like a clock.

I will try that tomorrow.
The fluids are full needs to be changed, I'll go in and have a flush and filter change. As soon as this thing moves out of 4low.

Thanks for all the help. Car forums are the best. I built my 77 celica from the info on classic-celica I put a 7mge in it.

I think I should get a rebuilt tranny and t-case. Anyone use one from japan?

The above recommendations are still solid, troubleshoot generally in least-to-most invasive order, checking off things as you go. not 100% sure on how the chain-driven t-case shifting functioned, but it sounds more like a trans, and less like a t-case issue above. not sure what your particular case is cupcake, but the FSM is a great place to start and has troubleshooting workflows for lots of major component systems you can leverage. also holy thread revival
