Red face Strange engine tap...?

Well 3 valve adjustments later and now ....they're still loud. Actually it sounds like only one steady tap tap tap tap A loud one, not a typical "not perfectly quiet" 22r. I (and a mechanic buddy) have tried to check them multiple times. They're right at .008 and .012 we even tried .007 and .011 which actually helped but there is still a tap!!! Im starting to wonder if it could be something else in the top end tapping? I installed this reman 22re myself, it now has just over 8k on it. If anyone has any ideas im in very much need of the help. Cam maybe? thanks in advance, Alan

Timing chain? Is it louder when you first start it?

Thanks for the reply. No it is constant cold, hot, thru the whole RPM range, parked or goin down the road. It speeds up with RPM's tho. Ive got the metal-backed chain guide, could that make more noise than the plastic one....??

im no expert, but im sure it would, or maybe an injector is doing it. You will have to wait for some better help to really diagnose it. But i want to see where this goes.

An injector is definitly a possibility i hadnt considered. I suppose that could explain why it feels more sluggish than it did before the new engine (the old on died at only 123k due to the oil strainer getting too full of the old plastic from long gone timing chain guides)

Thanks, bend. And your right. I was mainly curious about the metal guides being a factor so i searched that for a while, and i couldnt find anything about them having a noise issue. I just know it shouldnt be THIS loud. This is my 4th 22r, and know they aren't the smoothest engine when it comes to annoyance noise

i have readjusted my valves and it got better but i couldn't get it to go away, i have a small exhaust leak between my down pipe and manifold and have tried to fix it twice and it keeps coming back. You really cant stop them from ticking lol its never ending. but i would check the injectors

Yeah i definitly will. And about your leak from the manifold to downpipe, thats a very strong possibility for mine also. I havent checked to make sure that was perfectly tight since i installed the engine.... on the inside while your driving under acceloration it sounds like a giant sewing machine lol not the best description but its hard to describe it
